What a venture studio actually does

Not an agency, not a fund, not an aggregator. A plain explanation of the studio model, and why we think it fits consumer brands.

“Venture studio” is one of those terms that sounds clear until someone asks you to define it. It gets used for incubators, agencies with equity deals, holding companies and almost everything in between. So here’s how we think about it, and what it means for the brands we work with.

The short definition

A venture studio builds and grows companies using a shared team and a repeatable playbook. Instead of each brand hiring its own specialists for creative, paid media, analytics, operations and strategy, a single experienced team works across several brands. Each brand gets more capability than it could afford alone, and each new brand benefits from what the studio learned on the last one.

The studio has real ownership in the outcome. That’s the main difference from a service provider.

How it differs from the alternatives

An agency sells time or deliverables. Its incentives are tied to the retainer, not to whether the brand succeeds. Good agencies care about results, but the structure doesn’t require them to.

A fund provides capital and advice, then relies on the founding team to execute. The value is money and network, not hands-on work.

An aggregator buys brands outright, usually at scale, and runs them through a centralised operation. The founder typically exits.

A studio sits between these. It does the work like an agency, shares the upside like an investor, and brings a shared operating system like an aggregator. It can also work alongside a founder rather than replacing them.

Two ways in

We work with brands in two ways.

We build. We start brands from an opportunity we see in the data, a need customers are signalling that nobody is serving well. The studio develops the product, the brand and the launch, and runs growth from day one.

We partner. We work with established brands that already have a product customers love and are ready for their next stage. Often that means a new channel, a stronger creative engine, or a direct-to-consumer business alongside a marketplace one. Depending on the brand, that means acquiring it or partnering with founders who want to keep ownership.

The playbook is the same either way. The starting point is different.

What the shared team actually does

In practice, a studio’s value shows up in a few places.

  • Creative at volume. A single production system, combining creators, editors and AI tools, serves every brand. That makes the steady flow of new ads that paid media needs affordable.
  • Paid media experience. The team has scaled accounts before, across Meta, Google and TikTok, and brings that pattern recognition to each new brand.
  • Shared learning. What works for one brand’s audience often hints at what will work for another’s. A studio sees more tests, more failures and more wins than any single brand.
  • Infrastructure. Analytics, reporting, store templates, email flows, testing frameworks. Built once, improved continuously, deployed quickly.
  • Focus. Founders get to spend their time on product and customers rather than learning paid media from scratch.

What a studio isn’t good for

The model isn’t right for everyone, and it’s worth being direct about that.

If a brand’s main challenge is product development in a deeply technical category, a marketing-led studio is the wrong partner. If a founder wants complete independence and only needs a few campaigns, an agency or freelancer is simpler. If a brand needs a large capital injection more than operating help, a fund is the better fit.

Studios work best where growth depends on creative, paid media and a disciplined testing culture. In our experience, that describes most consumer brands selling online.

Why we built it this way

We built Grand Slam around the parts of brand building we know best: creative production, paid media and the AI tools that now connect them. A studio lets us apply that across multiple brands, compound what we learn, and share in the results we help create. For the brands we work with, the promise is simple. They get a senior team that’s invested in their growth, not just billing for it.
